*Phi Iota Alpha’s Executive Director Awarded the President’s Volunteer
Service Award*

New York, New York – April 12, 2014

In honor of National Volunteer
Week<http://www.pointsoflight.org/signature-events/national-volunteer-week>
(April
6-12) UNICEF U.S. Fund recognized 45 volunteers who spent the last year
advocating, educating, and fundraising for the fund by giving them
thePresident’s
Volunteer Service Award <http://www.presidentialserviceawards.gov/>.
Together, these volunteers contributed a total of 45,400 hours to the U.S.
Fund for UNICEF.

Among the 45 volunteers recognized by UNICEF U.S. Fund was Phi Iota Alpha’s
Executive Director Francisco M. Lugo. Bro. Lugo is the second member of the
fraternity that has been given this award by UNICEF U.S. Fund. Last year,
Bro. Ruben Garcia was one of eight UNICEF U.S. Fund volunteers who received
the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

The President’s Volunteer Service Award program was established to honor
the volunteer work of individuals, families and organizations throughout
the United States. There have been several variations of this program using
different names. The current program was created by President George W.
Bush in 2003 when an Executive Order created the President’s Council on
Service and Civic Participation.

The Council was established to recognize the important contributions
Americans of all ages are making within their communities through service
and civic engagement. The President’s Volunteer Service Award is now an
initiative of the Corporation for National and Community Service and the
Points of Light Institute.

UNICEF has saved more children’s lives than any other humanitarian
organization in the world. Working in more than 150 countries, UNICEF
provides children with health care, clean water, nutrition, education,
emergency relief, and more. The U.S. Fund for UNICEF supports UNICEF’s work
through fundraising, advocacy, and education in the United States.

UNICEF is at the forefront of efforts to reduce child mortality worldwide.
There has been substantial progress: the annual number of under-five deaths
dropped from 13 million in 1990 to 8.8 million in 2008. But still, 22,000
children die each day from preventable causes. Our mission is to do
whatever it takes to make that number zero by giving children the
essentials for a safe and healthy childhood. For more information, visit
