Statement on Texas Tech University Incident

* * *
STATESBORO, GA—The National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations (NALFO) stands with the Latino Greek community at Texas Tech University. The incident that occurred last month when screenshots from a GroupMe depicted derogatory statements about undocumented immigrants is simply unacceptable. In this case, what is even more disappointing and unacceptable is that these statements were made by members of the fraternity community which included the now ex-president of the Interfraternity Council (IFC). While we applaud the efforts being made by the administration to investigate and address the incident and the swift actions taken by Tau Kappa Epsilon and their Omicron Rho chapter these efforts are simply not enough.
As the leading voice that represents 16 national Latino organizations, NALFO is calling on the leaders of Texas Tech University, all three governing councils and all national organizations that have chapters at Texas Tech to do more to proactively address these types of issues that unfortunately have become far too common on college campuses around the country. As members of the fraternal community, it is our responsibility to look at how we can start and/or continue to help all our members understand the issues of diversity, equity and inclusion in order to prevent these types of incidents from occurring in the future.
Sincerely,
Francisco M. Lugo, M.Ed.
President, National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations
