SR ACADEMIC PROGRAM COORD (Represented by URA-AFT)
Reports to the Director of New Student Programs. Assists in the development of programs that introduce undergraduate students to the resources necessary to their success and satisfaction at Rutgers University- New Brunswick/Piscataway. Assists in the recruitment, selection, and training of peer instructors for the First-year Interest Group Seminars (FIGS) program, a signature program within the Division of Academic Engagement and Programming. Launched in 2000 at Rutgers, FIGS enrolls over 1600 first-year students in more than 70 sections taught by talented upper class students each fall semester. FIGS aids first-year students in their transition to college and encourages active learning and engagement during the first semester while exploring an academic area of interest. Teaches 1-2 sections of a three-credit course in Peer Instructor Education and is responsible for reviewing, approving, and providing feedback on peer instructor syllabi and curriculum plans. Supervises the Graduate Coordinator for FIGS, the team of Senior Peer Instructors and an undergraduate intern, and will coordinate the selection processes for these positions. Participates in assessing the effectiveness of the FIGS program with the Director and Senior Director and support initiatives developed by the division as well as efforts to grow and expand the FIGS program. Coordinates the FIGS Peer Instructor Alumni Outreach program consisting of maintaining the database of former Peer Instructors, producing FIGS Alumni newsletters, and coordinating alumni events. Partners with other university departments and Campus Deans to develop programs relevant to new students and implements broad-scale event planning for events such as a university-wide recognition ceremony celebrating the academic success of students in their first two years at the university. Participation in new student advising programs and Orientation, as it relates to the promotion of FIGS and first-year student success, will be an important component of this position. Creates and updates content on the FIGS website and utilizes social media to promote the FIGS program.
Job Requirements
Requires a master’s degree in student affairs administration, higher education, or in a comparable, relevant field of study, plus excellent problem solving skills, a commitment to students and their development, and the ability to work with a highly diverse population. Requires strong communication, presentation, and organizational skills. One to two years experience in programs for first-year students and experience with peer education programs and instruction and training is preferred.
